Paranoia? Fantasy?

If I were a terrorist then I might be looking at attacking computer systems
around the World. What better way to do this than to offer free software
that people willingly download and install on their PCs?
Specifically, I would want to offer the sort of software that downloads and
auto-installs updates all the time. So, the software I send out initially is
completely harmless, until one day it downloads a harmful update.
So, just how do I know that my free anti-virus software is not going to turn
harmful some day? I'm not fussed about attacks against me, but what havoc
could be caused by a few hundred thousand PCs all trying to bring down key
servers/networks? Pure fantasy?
