Hi,
I spent the weekend on the telephone helping a friend solve his 'cannot
start Windows XP home' problem. I had advised him to use the 'Repair'
option. His pre-SP2 Recovery CD failed on the repair so he then tried
with an OEM XP Home/SP2 cd which he'd borrowed from a neighbour, which
also failed.
So he ended up installing a new version of XP Home from the borrowed OEM
XP/SP2 cd onto the existing volume, so he ended up with a working XP Home,
together with the need to delete the broken one. I thought this would be
OK, and save him the trouble of installing using his pre-SP2 recovery cd
and then tracking down SP2.
I thought we were home and dry once the install was finished and XP Home
was running. All his documents etc. were intact.
Of course, Windows needs activation, but he tells me it refused his
activation. Are we missing something? He used his original serial
number, not his neighbour's when he installed, so why won't it activate?
Any suggestions, comments, advice very welcome.
Thanks!
Pete
Pete,
When you say "refused his activation", do you mean via internet or automated
phone?
Chris
