I built the pc in question nearly 7 years ago so I hope this is the right
ng.
Abit BH6 mobo with slot 1 P3/100 fsb 1ghz processor. Last bios, XP pro.
640 mb ram (3 sticks), 2x maxtor hdd, cdrw, fdd, modem, soundblaster. Not
a flying machine but perfect for household chores. CPU fan was getting
noisy so I changed it this morning.
Pressed the go button, single beep (correct) went through post and
detected all drives. Then a blank screen. Tried a few more times with same
results. Now I start to worry.
Pulled all cards out except graphics & 1 stick of ram. Tried again, just
the same. Tried swapping ram with the other 2 sticks, no difference.
Changed psu for a known working unit, no change but this did get the fdd
working which it hasn't for years. Made we wonder. But still the darned
thing wouldn't boot. Removed C drive and replaced with a C drive from a
work pc. No boot, but went through post ok. Tried original C drive in work
pc- not detected.
Tried to run maxtor hdd diagnostics floppy which hung.
I'm thinking that the c drive and psu have probably died, but also wonder
if the mobo has thrown the towel in. I can't see any burst/leaking caps.
Any thoughts or ideas please

Nick.

Many thanks to each and all.
Have tried reseating the gfx card and also another. No improvement.
Bios is set to boot from cdrom. Will start booting but hangs after a short
while.
Have cleared and re-configured the bios but still no boot.

This morning connected the old maxtor C drive to a more modern pc and there
appears to be no problem with it. Have copied all relevant files and
folders.
Also went through the odds & sods box and have assembled on the bench a
different pc with the exception of cpu and ram. Same problems. Nicked some
ram from a work pc, slightly better but still not right. Installled an old
P3 550 - lo and behold, it boots.
So it looks to me like the cpu may have popped its clogs.
Am in the process of thoroughly backing up 120gigs at the moment (using a p3
550) which will take some time. After that is hopefully completed
successfully I'll play further with the old cpu.

Once again, thanks for all your help.
What a great way to spend August Bank Holiday :((

Nick.
