I want to add a bigger Hard drive to this comp (son has nearly filled
up this 40Gb). My intention is to clone with Acronis the contents of
the hard drive to a bigger one, then use that drive with the old one
as a back up.
In the Bios it states
Primary IDE master = Maxtor Hard Disk (plugged in middle cable)
Primary IDE slave = DVD player (plugged in end of cable)
Secondary Master = CD/RW (plugged in at end of cable)
Secondary Slave = none
What is confusing me is the positioning of the cables. Should I change
them?
What would be the best set up to achieve my aim?
Both HDD's on primary set as slave and master and then both optical drives
on the secondary again set as slave/master
Probably better to have both hard disks set as a masters on the primary
and secondary interfaces. The optical drives can simply be setup as
slaves arranging them to minimize anticipated master to slave (and vice
versa) data transfer activity within the same cable.
OTOH, you might be forced to put the hard drives on one interface by
cabling constraints. In this case, keeping the old 40GB Maxtor in the
mix, I doubt it'll make much difference, performancewise.
