What are the current problems being experienced, and what primarily is it
being used for?
Chris
Basically word processing, light office duties, Internet access and
playing a few simple games. Nothing outlandish. The main problem was
an illegal copy of Windows XP Pro and the fact that it runs very slow.
I take on board what is being said and would tend toward advising that
the machine is never going to break any records but a further 256 MB
of RAM would make a difference. Thanks for the input, it is most
helpful. It may be of interest to a few folk out there that the
customer was charged £1100 + for the building of the machine in 2004.
I am pushed to find £300 worth of bits in it including Windows
software!!
Ian
If it runs *very* slowly with that spec I would suggest the problem is more
likely to be software related rather than a hardware one. This is likely if
the updates to XP have not been applied, and if no anti-malware software is
installed. A further 256MB of RAM will improve the machine, but for its
intended usage there is no point in adding a 1GB stick to it.
I have run XP on a number of machines with 900MHz Celerons and 128MB of
SDRAM. With a lot of the pointless eye candy turned off they were at least
useable for the sort of things your customer's machine is doing.
WRT the illegal copy of XP, perhaps it would be worth telling your customer
that Microsoft may, under certain restricted circumstances, provide a
complimentary licence if you participate in the WGA scheme. Failing that,
they will sell him one at a reduced price.
