Seconded. Usually those types of faults are down to bad/incompatible
I recently had a similar problem. with a new motherboard / ram / uP
bundle. Unpredicatable lockups, problems with copying files - the saem
symptoms you describe.
Eventually tried some different RAM, and it all started to work...
The new RAM supplied with the bundle seemed to pass the POST, but
wasn't up to installing / running XP.
