reinstalling XP in new case, old HDD

Here's one....
I have to transfer an HDD from an old, malfunctioning box to a new one. The
disk is OK as far as I know. I understand XP cannot be transferred from one
machine to another as it (XP) makes a note of the serial number of the CPU
whilst first installing. I will therefore have to reinstall XP from the
original disk but want to do this without losing all the info in My
Documents etc. etc. (This is not my machine, someone else's you understand)
Can I do this with a repair install?
If so, can anyone please advise how I can do a repair install, I don't know
what to do when I get to the command prompt for the relevant drive.
Or if there is another way???
Many thanks in advance
