Most desktop IDE drives aren't designed for 24*7 running.
By running you actually mean continuous I/O...
o Most Laptop 2.5" HDs are not designed for 24*7 server environment
---- eg, Hitachi made E7K 24*7 rated drives
---- eg, Seagate made Savvio 24*7 SCSI drives
---- eg, for blade *servers* which thrash them continually
o Most Desktop HDs are made for 24*7 continuous I/O
---- eg, SCSI 3.5" & 2.5"
---- eg, SATA 3.5" WD Raptor, Barracuda etc
Older Desktop 5400rpm HDs are mainly for desktop usage.
Your application is home server...
o That is unlikely to be continuous 24/7 multi-user I/O thrashing
---- eg, 24/7 continuous seeking
o That is more likely to be continuous running, intermittent I/O
---- eg, serving video, files, applications, etc
So basically any.
