I know it is an old CPU now (relatively), but how does it compare to the
lower end X2 Athlon 64s?
Poor value for money unless you are doing something that will benefit from
the large cache.

I do a fair bit of home video re-encoding, and playing with audio (just
fun), and some 3d gaming.
I think all of these (especially video and audio work) would benefit more
from a higher clockspeed than the extra cache.
What is everyones opinion of the best budget AMD processor? Something
that isn't in the FX price range, but won't be completly grinding to a
halt in the next 2 years.
The Athlon 64 3500+ might just about last that long, or the X2 4400+.

the Opteron CPUs (normally way out of price range or on a 940 socket)
were very rock solid stable, and especially suited to aircooled over
clocking. I admit it has been a while since I overclocked anything, but
seeing as I like to get most bang for buck, I'm willing to give it a go.
Last thing I overclocked properly was my old BP6. It was great, I ran a
pair of 466 Celerons at 525mhz purely using software tweaks and standard
cooling. I still have that rig and I must put it back together as a BEOS
or Linux station.
I see that most things are done in software these days.
