HI All

Continuing the saga of the Dead PC....

New motherboard, uP, ram package - works great....
...except the old hard disk with a legal copy of Win XP
on it doesn't want to play.

Tried 'repairing' the WinXP installation using the disks that came with
the original PC - went through all the usual Install stuff but ended up
with a Blue Screen and complaints about viruses and something bad in
ntfs.sys

Back in the days of Win98 it was all so easy - and you could swap a hdd /
motherboard without problems - seems that doesn't work with Win XP...

Is the only way forward to buy a new copy of XP ?

As a total newcomer to this (XP) - what's the various merits / problems
with buying the eBay specials - or is it better to shell out £50 or so
(Novatech) for a licenced copy of XP ?

<rhetorical question>
Why's it all so darn complicated ?
<rhetorical off>

Away from the PC for the weekend - but will answer all suggestions on
Monday - thanks in advance !

Have had this problem myself on a win98 instalation about 8 years ago lol.
Since then ive allways done a fresh install if replacing mobo and sometimes
cpu.

You need a reinstall really. The xp is set up specifically for your type of
mobo and cpu and in most cases work work with anything else.

Shouldent take you too long, i managed a reinstall the other night in 2
hours and that included backing up my data to xbox.
