Re: wga notification on legitimate installs

Have noticed a number of legitimate users are been plagued by Windows
Genuine Advantage Notification, with the standard claims of 'victim of

Now I know these installs are legit, they are oem home xp installs by
large
scale manufacturers, in several cases, windows had not been
recovered/restored in any way and the computer is using the original OS
as
it came from the supplier.

I have found that carrying out a validation online at the windows update
site, to download some software, sometimes results in the wga nag
disappearing on a reboot, but I have also seen it fail, again on entirely
legitimate software.

Some people can get highly agitated when a message tells them that
something
they have bought is stolen/copied/counterfeighted and simply telling
people
to ignore it, is not a solution.

Anyone come across a simple foolproof method of making wga work properly
on
legitimate installs?

Has anyone else also noticed that it is possible to induce wga
notification
errors with an over enthusiastic useage of hijackthis?

I don't think there is a way of making WGA work reliably on legit
installs,
so in the mean time this will get rid of the nag screens on any install.

XP HOME
Restart your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, follow these steps.
Restart your computer. Before you see the Windows XP logo, hold down the
F8
key. Select Safe Mode.
Login in as Administrator. You'll get a warning about running in Safe
Mode.
Click Yes. Find ' WgaLogon.dll ' in c:\windows\system32 folder.
Select file.
Right click Properties > Security > Advanced.
Select ' System ' name.
Select ' Edit ' button
Find ' Traverse Folder / Execute ' and tick ' Deny ' box.
'OK' out, and ' Yes ' we want to continue etc.
Reboot.

XP PRO
Open any folder.
Tools > Folder Options > View and de-select [turn off] ' Simple file
sharing '. Find ' WgaLogon.dll ' in c:\windows\system32 folder.
Select file.
Right click Properties > Security > Advanced.
Select ' System ' name.
Select ' Edit ' button
Find ' Traverse Folder / Execute ' and tick ' Deny ' box.
'OK' out, and ' Yes ' we want to continue etc.
Reboot.

This should fix the problem, but if the nags continue do the same with '
WgaTray.exe'

HTH, Major Tom.

But this will only work until MS modify the wga tool, afaik a new wga update
was put on the servers a few days ago, does it still work with the update?
