If you're getting different problems on each install, it's often a
memory fault. Give the machine a few hours of memtest and a few passes
of Prime95.

Plus, on the stuck IE home page, did you download the latest version of
ZoneAlarm free for your install? If so it has bugs and that symptom is

them, revert to v6.1.744.001 from here:

Also if I have a failed install, I wipe the partition table and early
part of the disk
to avoid windows getting confused (it often appears to). I use and
ancient tool
from IBM called zap.exe (.com?) to do this which is available here:

I've seen a copy of zap.com on an old Tiny PC recovery boot floppy.
F-Prot's heuristic algorithm (rather sensibly) flagged it as "A
Destructive Program" :-)
