Got a new computer and have had to install Windows XP several times, as
everytime I do it there is always something gone wrong with the
installation
or something fails to work.
If you're getting different problems on each install, it's often a
memory fault. Give the machine a few hours of memtest and a few passes
of Prime95.
ZoneAlarm free for your install? If so it has bugs and that symptom is
one of
them, revert to v6.1.744.001 from here:

Also if I have a failed install, I wipe the partition table and early
part of the disk
to avoid windows getting confused (it often appears to). I use and
ancient tool
from IBM called zap.exe (.com?) to do this which is available here:
http://www.isgsp.net/files/ibm-wipe-zap.zip
I've seen a copy of zap.com on an old Tiny PC recovery boot floppy.
F-Prot's heuristic algorithm (rather sensibly) flagged it as "A
Destructive Program" :-)
