If you're getting different problems on each install, it's often a
memory fault. Give the machine a few hours of memtest and a few passes
of Prime95.
ZoneAlarm free for your install? If so it has bugs and that symptom is one of
them, revert to v6.1.744.001 from here:

Also if I have a failed install, I wipe the partition table and early part of the disk
to avoid windows getting confused (it often appears to). I use and ancient tool
from IBM called zap.exe (.com?) to do this which is available here:
