i have an asus p4p800 motherboard and using a socket 479 converter to
run a pentium m processor 1.7 ghz with 2 ghz cache. it is rock solid
and has been so for the last few months since i built it. however, the
cpu temperature seems to be a little on the high side. after it has
been on for half and hour or so it reads 39-40 degrees and often idles
at 41-42. at full load this would get to the higher forties. i am
using the stock asus fan that came with the sloket.

What makes you think these temperatures are "a little on the high side"?

i have checked the connection between cpu die and heatsink, it is
good, not too much thermal compound. would a better heatsink fan
reduce the temperature?

Probably, but I don't see any need.
