If it helps any, it is a Compaq Evo D31M. The compaq's website
mentions nothing of this problem. Any help appreciated, as the thing
wont turn off by the power button, and has to be switched off at the
wall!

some exhibit your problem. I haven't investigated, but I believe it
may the power management settings in the BIOS, as I seem to recall
changing the settings on one system and the symptom appeared. I think
it is related to the stand-by/instant-off setting.
