Tried this unfortunately. Even in safe mode, clicking Start...Run and
anything causes an "Explorer has encountered an error" message. I'm
thinking that XP's probably pretty much hosed but was just hoping
someone's seen it before and knows a trick with the recovery console
that'll help...
cheers for the thought though.

ERD Commander is your friend, will allow you to easily access system restore
from systems that wont boot.
Google for it, it aint cheap, but is widely available.....
Another cheaper alternative would be to use bart pebuilder, boot it up,
navigate to the c:\window\system32\config folder, rename "system" "software"
"sam" "security" and "default "
Go to the system volume information folder on the c: drive, open up the most
recent restore folder, and the most recent snapshot folder, copy over to
c:\window\system32\config
_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
rename the files by removing the obvious, voila......... You hope....
If it doesnt work, try an older snapshot, it is effectively the same as
carrying out the old dos command on win98, of scanreg /restore a magic cure
for a system that wouldnt boot.
