I seem to be having a recurring problem with my PCs... put simply, they're

Well, until I bought a new 3.2E (prescott) processor cheap on ebay, and
paired it with a new motherboard I happened to get my hands on. As I
didn't
want a repeat performance, I also bought a new Zalman cooler
(7000CNPS7000B-AlCu). Well I'm dismayed: idle temperature is at 50-55C,
and
it easily reaches 75C after a load of 2-3 minutes. It makes no difference
whether the case is opened or closed.
What could I possibly be doing wrong? Fitting a fan is not rocket science,
I
can't imagine what could be going wrong. Actually I have two ideas: could
it
be than I'm putting too much or too little thermal paste? (would it make
*that* much difference?). Also, I haven't fitted any case fans. Could this
be the reason? Would putting a case fan (or two) make a difference of 30
or
so celcius? (remember, having the case open or closed makes no
difference -
also, I have no particularly "hot" components inside other than the
processor; just 1 hard disk and a geforce 4).
Often motherboard monitors are really far out. Can you touch the heatsink
with your finger, if it is unbareable to touch after about five or ten
seconds, then it probably is running at that temp, if it just warm, then
relax.
