Ideal temperature for a hard drive is <40oC...
o Maxstor -- particularly keep below 40oC if possible
---- they have a higher temp rating than most HDs
---- they also run hotter than most HDs so negating this
o HD life is affected by temperature
---- airflow matters over the logic board & drive body itself
Beware one problem with S.M.A.R.T. HD temperature utils
o Most work fine -- eg, HDDTemp
o Most only report one temperature if multiple HD fitted
o Conceivably the temp reported may be of the cooler HD :-)
Sent an email via your site re the 120mm fan, depends on which
model of fan you have - there are several. For temps you should
try to get a HD down to around 32-35oC, but they will run fine
at temperatures considerably above this. So idle <40oC is ideal.
HD maximum is typically quoted as an average...
o It can be exceeded for short periods - many products do just that
---- however excessive temps do reduce life
o Laptop HDs tend to idle well below max temp & can peak above
---- eg, 42oC at idle, but 65-68oC during a long anti-virus scan
HDs are electromechanical devices which DO benefit directly from
lower temperature running - most other components are very tolerant.
without the blowing in fan main sata hard drive would be 49-55
degrees. I use DTemp for hard drive temp monitoring. cpu temp is
between 38-47. mainboard temp with case closed is between 35-40.
o I would not want a HD at 49-55oC - that is too high
---- fans can lose RPM with age, some sleeve quote life at -30% rpm
---- thus as the PC ages so the HD can end up operating way out of spec
o A case ambient of 35-40oC would be ok mainly <38oC
---- Intel temp controlled solutions use 32oC low speed, 38oC high speed
---- that seems a reasonable benchmark to aim for re ideal case ambients
Verify your case intake (due to case design) isn't too restrictive and
if you can replace any restrictive fan grills with round wire fan grills.
85% of the case resistance is down to the fan grills on PSU & intake.
Ideally you need to baseline on a warm day vs on a cooler day.
