Problem with lack of sound

Just built a mate a computer, all new stuff, even sent it back and had
replacements.
The CPU is a P4 3.2, the motherboard is a Asus P5WD2, 1gb ram, a seagae
300gb hdd, windows XP pro, etc.
The only old bit in it is a creative 5.1 soundcard, which is part of
the problem...
With that card fitted I get no sound. If I take it out, I get no sound
from the motherboard. If I reload the machine without that card, guess
what.... no sound.... I've had the board replaced, and the same
problems.
But... When I run the speaker test with The creative software, I can
hear sound through my headphones when they are plugged into the card,
and through the speakers, but only on the headphone test (when I run
the speaker test I hear nothing).
Has anyone got any ideas?
I've tried:
Firmware updates (both to the board and the soundcard)
Latest drivers (as above)
XP Home, W2k, XP Pro
Has anyone got any ideas at all?
TIA
