That spare capacity on a hard disk that is used to 'hot fix' faulty
sectors is hidden from the user and will not be taken from the declared
size of the drive so, keeping it simple, a 100GB drive will actually be
100GB + the hot fix capacity.
As hard disks manage their own hot fixing, this operation is transparent
to the end user and the disk appears defect fee UNTIL the hotfix space
runs out and the OS 'takes over' - this means that a disk that 'suddenly'
starts finding bad sectors has been internally doing it for some time and
should be treated as quite unwell.
Unless the hard disk / PC in question is showing signs of not working
properly I'd not worry about things.

It had been 'short stroked' to reduce it's capacity at some time in it's
life.
Hitachi's Drive Features Tool allowed me to increase it to the full
advertised capacity.
