A friend recently got a new (to them) PC running XP but it seems to
be having a problem with their Fuji digital camera.

Tell your friend to come to the group and we can answer him direct,
it saves having information passing between people and being
misinterpreted.

He has no idea usenet even exists and is completely non-technical.

The trouble is that he probably has USB1.1 rather
than USB2.

It's a USB 1.1 camera and USB 2.0 motherboard.
I've tried removing the USB 2.0 controller so it falls back to a 1.1 port
but no luck.

Try a card reader instead for the SD card if it takes
one.

Well , thats what I'm going to end up doing for him , but if I can avoid
that it's handy.

Any camera that doesn't will probably only take about 16
photos. That would have been the most obvious thing to do.

Yes , and it costs money compared to finding a free solution.

Is it
really a friend or is it your PC and camera!

No , it really is a friend.

You have answered your own question - it works on your PC nd not on
his. So all you have to do is work out what is different!

That's easy. Mine was a Dell Latitude D810 laptop and his was a homebuilt PC
using an intel motherboard.
