A friend recently got a new (to them) PC running XP but it seems to be
having a problem with their Fuji digital camera.
When I connect it to a USB port it is detected and recognised as a
removable drive but when you go into it it goes as far as showing the
file
names. If you try and open or copy one of the pics it stops responding
and
crashes explorer. Sometimes it will generate a few thumbnails before
crashing but thats it.

I've tried reinstalling the USB controller drivers and formatting the
memory card without success.
It does let me copy a few small files onto and off the camera but any
pictures taken on the camera cause problems.

Now that would lead me to believe the camera is at fault but when I
connect it to my laptop it works just fine , and other USB devices
including a 1gb flash drive work fine on the suspect PC.

Any suggestions on a cause or solution?

Try adding a PCI interface / extra USB ports card into the PC.
The camera may work on those ok but not on the native motherboard USB
ports.

If so, the problem is a compatibility issue between camera and motherboard
USB controller chip.
(not uncommon by the way - especially if it's an earlier VIA controller)

I had same problem - downloading from camera dock to pc via usb (whether to
original usb port or to new pci card with 4 usb ports) caused BSOD when
pressing the 'transfer photos now' button on the dock; same if connecting
the camera direct & bypassing the dock. Use a card reader now through one
of the usb ports on my Mitsu monitor - no problems. PC is 1999 vintage,
Asus m'board, the PCI card I tried (& then uninstalled) was Via. Not sure
if that helps you...
