I wonder if anyone can help out here. I'm trying to figure out what barebones system to buy/make and have got stuck on the motherboard.
Most new motherboards, it seems, have drivers that will not work in
win98se.
ULi chipset is a candidate, eg. ASRock:
http://www.asrock.com/product/939Dual-SATA2.htm
Has both forward and backward capability: AGP & PCI-E, PATA & SATA, Serial/Parallel & USB, even slot for next gen M2 AMD processor socket.
They also do a Win98 compatible dual 754/939 card using the ULi M1689 chipset, this is interesting as you could get a cheap Sempron now and upgrade to an X2 939 when they drop in price after the M2 comes out.
If you go for a 939dual, it may be worth checking the forums at
http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=30
where they recommend upgrading to drivers available directly from Uli website in certain situation. Can be worth knowing these things in advance I think.
I see Abit also do cheap boards with Uli now, I don't know if they're Win98 safe or not.
Interesting, hadn't really thought about Uli. Will give it a look but i see from your next post that might not be a good idea.
I've looked at virtually all mobo providers and chipset combos. Initially i was going for a MSI/Via solution becasue it definitely supports older OSes. But it's looking a bit dated now.
NVidia Nforce4 rules out win98SE but i still have my doubts about this "not supporting win98se" lark. I spoke to one technical support guy at a well-know UK supplier and he said that, "Word has come down that we're to say our supplied mobos are not compatible with win98se". He went on to say that the truth is that they haven't necessarily been tested with win98se. I'm a wee bit suspicious because good old M$ would really love the millions of win98 users to upgrade to XP or shortly vista....Excuse the rant...
System being considered:
Foxconn (Nvidia Nforce3 based) NF3250K8AA (AGP8 + five pci slots)
Sempron 3100+ or 3400+
Nexus Breeze case
Hitachi 80GB ATA (have found them reliable, and have a good utility for quiet mode operation)
******************
Graphics card??? -- would prefer an nvidia driver one; mid-range (40-70 quid) Any ideas? Quiet and stable. Proven (at least a year since release)
