There must be people who can afford to have a computer but who fall into
that category ... but these days you can get an OEM DVD-Writer for less
than £30 including VAT, say £20 more than the price of a CD-ROM drive
(which you pretty-much need anyway, to install an OS, etc.). £20 will buy
you about 200 floppies which will hold about 2.8Gb, or a bit more than half
a single-layer DVD's worth. I don't really think cost is a plausible excuse
not to have a writer ...
Do you think £30 for a luxury item is affordable by every computer
owner? If so, maybe you've never been out of the country.
There certainly are things for which a floppy is still useful -- especially
if you haven't got a USB memory stick -- but they're decreasing in number
and in importance. However, there's a LOT of data in the world on floppies,
and some of us are going to want to be able to access those data for a good
while yet (and haven't time to copy all those floppies onto DVD).
*I* still want a USB 5.25" floppy drive, but I have no real hope of finding
one...
It might be possible. If you have a USB whatnot that takes a 3.5 floppy
with standard connection, then you're in luck. Finding an old 5.25
drive might be fun, but once you do, just plug it in.
