I'm planning on replacing the P2 266 mhz CPU in this Deskpro
6266 I have with a PIII 600 Slot 1 100mhz the board is 440bx so
it will work. However there is a wire from the Foxconn oversized
heatsink on the current P2 266mhz CPU which connects to the
motherboard - there is no CPU fan. What is that wire for ? I`ve
never seen a PIII CPU Heatsink with a wire like that before only
CPU fan wires....

ISTR its a thermal sensor. If you disconnect it you'll get an
error message from the BIOS at every cold boot. I don't think it
can be disabled.

Oh right thanks I doubt the PIII 600 I buy will allow me to
connect this then so I`ll just have to bypass it with F1 right ?

Thanks btw.

According to this post from none other then Paul Durkin (of IT
dealers) you can trick the thermal sensor

http://tinyurl.com/b6elj

So I will for that connector next time I open the box.

Remove the thermal sensor from the old heatsink and attach it to the
new one.

The CPU I`ve bought is a Coppermine so it will display an error
"Unsupported CPU F1 to continue." anyway and I doubt this Compaq is
VRM 8.4 so it will give the Coppermine 2.0v instead of 1.65v which is
undesirable but not life threatening - Coppermine's have been given
that kinda voltage under intense overclocking conditions and were
stable and reliable. It only cost me £ 6.40 anyway.

I got a friend who works in a bank who at first claimed they were
"chucking out" P3 733 and P3 900's now he's changed too "I will have
a look for you" and "I`m not at work tommorow" which means if I
remember/can be arsed I`ll look and not exactly chucking them away.

So I might be stuck with this Deskpro EN @ PIII600 for some time I'd
feel a bit cheated to pick up a P3 733 or P3 900 for free - its not a
bad machine has grown on me. I fixed the CD Rom in properly which
required removing the riser board and disconnecting the IDE/Floppy
cables and ATX Connector just so I could get to one of the screws
that hold it in place :)

Did a stupid thing thought I could dual boot Windows XP and 2000 without
creating another partition. So I tried to install XP but setup froze with an
error in the file cmdide.sys.

So then I booted with a Win98bootcd and tried to install from i386\winnt.exe
w/o smartdrv but during the file copy process I had to skip files one of
them was cmdide.sys after reboot setup continued but halted shortly after
with error missing cmdide.sys. The CD is badly scratched as I haven't looked
after it so I guess thats why.

So I went rebooted and went back into Windows 2000 then I decided to edit
the boot.ini to remove the partial "XP upgrade/installation" boot option but
I f**ked up and after reboot I was left with NTLDR is missing!!! F**K
B&$$!!!ks!

The only option I had left (becuase I aint got my Windows 2000 cd handy) was
to repair with a copy of Windows 2003 Server evaluation so I ran setup from
cd boot and installed it.

It fixed the NTLDR problem and I could then boot into Windows 2000 also but
becuase I had 2 os on the same partition Windows 2000 registry was f**ked so
I ended up deleting it after I`d gotten all the drivers for Windows 2003
Server.

It runs sluggish on this P2 266 but its not too bad because I got 192mb RAM
although it will benefit from P3 600 untill I get another XP Pro CD.

And to all those opposed...
