It probably is the laser module dying on you. They're not repairable at
any economic price. You can stretch its lifespan by recording at slower
speeds and it should continue to work as a reader pretty much
indefinitely. Writing ups the power fed to the laser diode from the
reading level of ~3mW to something like 50-100mW. The faster you try and
write the higher the power needed and the sooner the laser will die.
If you plan to write a lot of discs in the future I'd say get a new
writer and keep this one in reserve in case the new one goes kablooey.
