It rather depends. For a box running as a file server, it seems a shame
to subject the cdrom to a 24/7 POH existence for the sake of no more
than an hour or two's worth of active duty a year. Unless you need to
mount CD media as one of the network shareable resources, I'd be
inclined to disconnect it (both data ribbon and power) once you've set
up the NOS but don't physically remove it from the case.

The standby power consumption seems to be in the 1 to 3 watt region for
a cdrom and a little higher for cdrw drives. Regardless of whether this
represents a 2 or 10% saving on the server's total consumption, it still
represents a saving of some 9 to 27 KWH per year which is going to work
out at less than a fiver's worth of electricity.

The annual savings on the electricity bill for a single cdrom drive are
insignificant but you might want to avoid burning up the (typically)
50,000 POH at 20% duty lifetime rating of the drive when it may only be
needed for perhaps less than two hours use per year.

50,000 hours represents 5.7 years so, on the face of it, you might not
consider it worth the trouble of disconnecting it anyway other than as a
means of maximising the chance that it will remain in working condition
on those rare occaisions that it is called upon to do it's job.
