Asus k8n sata problem

I have a Asus k8n motherboard with 2 maxtor 200 gig sata drives attached. I
have win xp pro on one which works fine and boots no probs on its own. I
bought the second maxtor today and put it on second sata connector and
installed a vista beta to it. Now if I set bios to boot from hd with vista
on it does so no problem but it is slow to read the other hd. Also if
booting to win xp hd it hangs and wont boot any further until i unplugg the
other hd and then boots into win xp fine.

This is baffling me and I am not sure if its the mb's sata contoller to
blame or that its because I have vista on the other hd as I did not boot to
xp with the new hd apart from when it was raw.

Any suggestions? I have put latest beta bios on mb to see if it is any
different but its the same.
