Best memory configuration

I tried to upgrade my AMD64 3400 system from 1Gb of DDR400 memory to 2Gb. I
then discovered after some research on Google why adding an extra DDR400
memory stick caused the instability problems I was now experiencing.
So far two ways around the problems of instability caused by the extra chip
seem to be successful.
1) Put in a 3rd 1gb chip which results in the memory speed dropping to the
equivalent of a DDR266, or
2) Setting the memory speed for 2 x 1GB chips to DDR333
I wanted the extra memory for editing in Photoshop and video, so from a
performance point of view which of the options above is best.
If anyone knows a better solution to the overall problem I am all ears. The
motherboard is an ASUS socket 754 KV8 SE Deluxe and Crucial memory
