What would cause this problem?

I've got two hard drives. Primary master is a Maxtor 160GB with four
partitions c,d, e and f, and primary slave is another Maxtor 120GB with
three partitions. If I rip a DVD (or single DVD .VOB file, such as a music
video clip) to any of the Master partitions, I get picture freezing when I
try and play it with Power DVD - it always freezes in the same place on the
movie. If I rip to any of the Slave partitions it plays fine! If I copy a
ripped DVD from the Master to the Slave it also plays fine, and if I copy a
previously ripped DVD from the Slave to the Master it then freezes (!).
Burning a DVD from the Slave rip also works correctly.
Is this a hard drive problem? There's can't be any file corruption or a
Master-Slave file copy wouldn't play properly, nor would a DVD burn work
properly. Windows loads and runs correctly from the Master drive. Both hard
drives have 8MB buffers and both are using UDMA Mode 6/ATA 133. I've enabled
the BigLBA setting in the registry using the Maxtor setup disc (none of the
partitions are over 137GB anyway).
Strangest problem I've ever seen, any ideas?
