Will this work?

Going to be installing a CR-RW/DVD combo drive for my brother as a
replacement for an existing DVD ROM drive, and replacing the HDD at
the same time. I've only ever previously done a HDD installation in
tandem with a full reinstallation of the OS, which I don't want to do
in this case.

(FWIW, the unit is a Packard Bell 9400)

What about if.....

Install the new HDD as a slave
Copy everything from the existing one to the new one
Remove the existing one, reset the new one to master

Assuming that I get the right master/slave settings right will that
work? Or is there some reason why the OS will crash if I put it on a
new HDD as is?

Whats the best way to copy it?

Is there an alternative process perhaps utilising the new CD-RW drive
that I'll be installing at the same time?

The existing HDD is only about 2.1 GB in total, AIUI, with not a lot
of space available

(keeping the existing HDD and just adding a new one isn't an
option...there are fears that the current HDD is about to fail)

Thanks in advance

Brian
