With a typical BT wires-only ADSL install you just have a phone socket (the
same phone socket that you always had). Into this you plug an ADSL
microfilter which has a BT-style phone socket for the phone connection and
an RJ-11 socket for the router.

There are various types of microfilter - some look like phone splitter
plugs, some are little boxes on a short wire to the phone plug, and some
are replacement socket face-plates.

It can be worth paying for a better-quality filter (costing a tenner or so,
rather than the usual couple of quid) if you have a fussy phone, fax, or
answering machine. Most routers work satisfatorily with even a cheap and
nasty filter, IME.

The line to each phone (or similar) needs to pass through a filter at some
point between the phone and the outside world. If you have several
extension sockets you will probably need to fit a filter to each one,
depending on the wiring. If your extensions plug into a phone splitter on
the master socket you only need to filter at that point.

The ADSL equipment (obviously) has to be plugged into the ADSL side of a
microfilter, and that must be plugged into an unfiltered socket.

If I understand you correctly, yes -- except that you don't need an RJ-11
adaptor because the microfilter *is* one.

Daniel.
