I have just done precisely that. I chose AVG and am very happy with it. Norton did not give up without a struggle and caused all sorts of problems as it did not uninstall cleanly.
Technical support at AVG were superb in helping to track down the problems, typically replying within an hour each time. Try that with Symantec. That sort of service, in itself, makes AVG worth a consideration.
Oh I dunno if you should be so harsh on Symantec, every problem I've had with their software has been answered almost immediately by their FAQ on their site. But then looking at it another way, it must have happened to an awful lot of people to be an FAQ :-)
Just wait till you have a problem that is not in the FAQ. A two or three day wait doesn't come close to the response time provided by AVG.
