I use Grisoft (AVG) anti-virus from my very early days with Windows. I
have
the almost daily updates, scheduled to be installed automatically between 4
and 5 in the morning, and run the scan at 5 a.m. This morning I got a
message saying that I had Backdoor Trojan Horse in my boot partition as well
as the other partitions variously housing the system partition clone, My
Documents backup, and system restore backup volumes. Since the yesterday's
5 a.m. scan was clear, the rogue must have got in between yesterday's and
this morning's 5 a.m. After spending the whole morning trying to trace what
had gone wrong, I eventually found that the Spell Checker for OE (by
Vampirefu) *setup* routine was the culprit.
AntiVir ran in another partition (for the whole disc) was clean. After
putting all the Backdoor TH to vault, AVG was run again and it was clean.
(Spell Check application itself is *still* working). Downloaded a new
sample of Spell Checker for OE off the web, five times, each from different
sites, Vampirefu's own as well as mirrors. And each was greeted
immediately after finishing download with the same waning box that Backdoor
TH was detected. The setting up programme downloaded was erased at once.
Took out a CD where I had a copy of the setup software recorded some 1 - 1½
years age. The same TH warning was splashed across the screen just as the
CD own playback window opened on screen.
I did not download and install anything yesterday. So it seems the AVG
update this morning between 4 and 5 did the damage.
And so it seems too that Grisoft AVG anti-virus is not that solidly
dependable after all.
PS: A report of this false positive is to be sent to Grisoft.
