I run a small office network. It's sort of mission critical, but if it went
down for a couple of hours it would not matter too much. What's important is
getting it back up again, rather than doing so straight away. I suspect that
most offices are like that.
What I have found is that any sort of backup that requires manual
intervention is not done as reguarly as it should be. Solution is as
follows:-
We back up between PCs on the network, which protects somewhat against
mechanical failure of any one hard disk.
We have a couple of USB disk drives hidden on the premises, and hopefully if
we had a big burglary and all the PCs were stolen, these would be missed by
the thieves. They would also survive a moderate fire, but we have business
interruption insurance anyway.
All these backups are completely automatic, using NTBackup. We do different
backup sets on different days of the week.
We also have a DVD writer and keep occasional backups off-site, but this is
sporadic.
The amount of info that changes and is important is actually quite small.
Scans of documents 10gig. |Databases/WP/spreadsheet files 2 gig. Emails 2
gig.
