Hi,
I am inextricably drawn into the upgrade cycle! Seems most modern mobos
are PCI / no AGP sockets.
Relatively recently I spent ~£75 on a reasonable AGP graphics card
(Sapphire Radeon 9550). I know you can spend loads on graphics card and
this one is relatively low end, but anyway, the question I would like to
ask is....
... Should I bite the bullet, go PCI and discard the old card, or seek
out a mobo which can take modern processors but still has AGP?
Objective for the upgrade: performance, use SATA hard drives rather than
IDE Ultra 133. Software development, disc intensive database building
and occasional gaming (Pro Evolution Soccer 4 only!)

I think you mean PCIe (PCI Express).
If you don't want to get a PCIe graphics card there is little reason to get
a PCIe motherboard. There are very few PCIe cards available as yet that
aren't graphics cards anyway, so if you have the need to use a few expansion
cards you could run out of normal PCI slots.
I am not ready to invest in a PCIe graphics card and I need more than 3
regular PCI slots, so I am sticking with AGP for now.
Here are a couple of excellent AGP boards that take modern processors:
