I have been using a freeware called DrvImagerXP since October, 2003.

Conceptually, you create 3 primary* partitions, say, drive C, D, and E.
Drive C D E
1) Work on WinXP DrvImagerXP - (Empty)
2) " " Copy of C
3) Work corrupted " "
4) Copy of (Copy of C) " "
1) Boot into C as normal.
2) Boot into D; the entire C is SAVED to E.
3) While working on C, virus attack, software glitch, ....anything.
4) Boot into D; C is RESTORED from E.
*In WinXP (Start > Rt. click My Computer > Management > Disk Management on
the Lt. console pane -- read the line at the very bottom of the chart on the
Rt. pane, and you will have a working understanding of primary and extended
partitions), you can have as many as 4 primary partitions (and as many
extended partitions as there are remaining single alphabets -- for naming
the partitions -- as you like). I have partitioned 10GB as C, 5 as D, 10 as
E, and many extended partition subdivisions (logical drives) on my 160G HD.
Day to day working is of course on drive C. D houses only WinXP, .NET
Framework, and DrvImagerXP. (No problem in activating this second copy of
WinXP on the same machine).
I used to save C to E routinely everyday before retiring as a precautionary
measure. Now, this is done only once in 7 - 10 days as WinXP has become
very stable after SP2 (from around August, 2004, or was it just a
coincidence?)
This simple programme uses the WinXP's own task backup engine, is fast , and
is solidly reliable: it has failed me *not even once*. It has drawbacks
(e.g. all on one HD, cannot download to CDs) but is good enough for me.
