You'd not be wrong there, mate. It wasn't for nothing that the initials
'ME' were understood to be an acronym for "Monumental Error".

Assuming the ram size is at least 128MB, I'd say win2k would be the
best OS upgrade option to be contemplating rather than that abomination
known as winXP (basically a badly broken version of win2k).

AVG will normally keep itself updated automatically so that should have
just left SpyBot and Ad-Aware possibly out of date (versionwise as well
as their databases).
Since the main problem these days is 'scumware' rather than 'viruses'
detectable by most AV programs, this could well be the problem (or, at
the very least, the initiator of the problem).
The other problem areas, especially in the case of large fat32 boot
partiton space, is the insane default data size limit in IE's cache
setting and the accumulation of dross in the system temp folder.
Of course, as another poster has pointed out, she could have run very
low on free disk space. However, this is all (almost totally) pointless
speculation and you won't really know the score unless you can actually
eyeball the system for yourself. However, if "She" is ok at following
telephoned instructions, the hints you've gained here might save the
need for an actual 'on-site' visit.
