If you hold the power button for more than 6 secs you have to release it the
very second you hear the power go down and sometimes you can miss it and the
machine restarts!

Is a startup initialization file or service causing the problem?


Your startup or shutdown problem might be caused by a startup initialization
file or service. Use the following procedure to determine if this is the
case.

1.. Start the Msconfig program.
To start Msconfig


1.. Click Start, click Run, and in the Open box type:
msconfig
2.. Click OK, and then click the General tab.

2.. Click Selective Startup, clear the Load System Services check box, and
then click OK.
3.. Restart your computer, and see if the problem still occurs.

If your computer starts up and shuts down correctly, then the cause of the
problem might be related to your system services. To resolve this problem,
proceed to the To troubleshoot system services section below.

If the problem is still occurring, then proceed to step 4.
4.. Start the Msconfig program, clear the Load Startup Items check box,
and then click OK.
5.. Restart your computer, and see if the problem still occurs.

If your computer starts up and shuts down correctly, then the cause of the
problem might be related to your startup items. To resolve this problem,
proceed to the To troubleshoot startup items section below.

If the problem is still occurring, then proceed to step 6.
6.. Start the Msconfig program, clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check
box, and then click OK.
7.. Restart your computer, and see if the problem still occurs.

If your computer starts up and shuts down correctly, then the cause of the
problem might be related to your System.ini file. To resolve this problem,
proceed to the To troubleshoot the System.ini file section below.

If the problem is still occurring, then proceed to step 8.
8.. Start the Msconfig program, clear the Process WIN.INI File check box,
and then click OK.
9.. Restart your computer, and see if the problem still occurs.

If your computer starts up and shuts down correctly, then the cause of the
problem might be related to your Win.ini file. To resolve this problem,
proceed to the To troubleshoot the Win.ini filesection below.

If the problem is still occurring, then proceed to step 10.
10.. Start the Msconfig program, clear the Process BOOT.INI File check
box, and then click OK.
Note

a.. You might not be able to clear the Use Original BOOT.INI check box
if the Boot.ini file has never been modified. If you cannot clear the Use
Original BOOT.INI check box, then go to step 12.
11.. Restart your computer, and see if the problem still occurs.

If your computer starts up and shuts down correctly, then the cause of the
problem might be related to your Boot.ini file. To resolve this problem,
proceed to the To troubleshoot the Boot.ini file section below.

If the problem is still occurring, then proceed to step 12.
12.. If you have reached this step, you have determined that your startup
or shutdown problem probably is not related to the startup initialization
files or services.

Reset Msconfig to normal startup, restart your computer, click No, I still
have a startup and/or shutdown problem below, and then click Next to
continue troubleshooting.
