Apoplogies for being off topic, but have you (or friend) ever looked at another OS?
The 'live' CDs available for linux lately are unusually impressive. For example 'Kubuntu Live'.


A distribution such as Suse 9.3 can also be downloaded free (5 CDs), or purchased of course.
In any case, it is used without registration for the licence. And used on any number of PCs.


The only proviso is that modern linux's need  a reasonable amount of RAM.
