I think you meant on-die _diode_, but I understand your meaning.
I've always assumed a surface mounted sensor when there appears to be
no evidence of the usual bead thermistor in the socket area and the bios
reports cpu temperature. The reason for my assumption being the slow
response in changes of temperature being reported when starting and
stopping CPUBurn.
If an on-die sensor diode were being employed, I'd expect to see a
noticeably faster response compared to the Jetway 'Thermistor
bead-on-a-stick' just touching the underside of the CPU method of
sensing. Since I don't, and in fact, usually quite the opposite, I can
only assume there is a surface mounted sensor (diode or thermistor)
somewhere amongst the chip capacitors coralled by the socket.

Thanks for that vote of confidence! :-)
If what you say is true, re the compensation of on-die sensor to
emulate a Tcase reading, I can only assume the designers involved are a
bunch of wankers.
I'm pretty certain that P4 MoBos rely on the cpu's on-die sensor diode
for temperature readings. The few P4 systems I've seen offer overheat
temp settings into the 90/95 deg mark, from which I can only assume must
be the die temperature rather than the case temperature (I very rarely
see Socket A MoBo overheat temp options above 75 deg C).
I can't see any point in _not_ showing the actual chip temperature.
