Thanks for all the replies, people. As discussed, replacing the
motherboard is Not An Option (for the hassle, I'd just tell them to
buy a new 200-quid PC).

The processor I have is marked AXDA2800DKV4C .

http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-amd-athlon-xp-microprocessors
lists this processor as:

AXDA2800DKV4C
Athlon XP 2800+
Clock speed: 2133 MHz
Cache: 512 KB
FSB: 133 MHz
Multipler: 16x
Voltage: 1.65 V
TDP: 68.3 W
Released: December 2004

Any comments about the above gratefully received!

Now I know that the board supports 133 MHz, so all I've got to do is
pray that 16x multiplier is supported. AFAIK the multipler is fixed in
the CPU, so does it matter what the mobo thinks? Probably yes, of
course, so I don't rate my chances but we'll see. The memory upgrade
alone should give significant performance gain, so if it doesn't work
on the older SDRAM mobo, I'll test it on my 266MHz DDR mobo at home
and flog it on eBay- they seem to be going for 50 quid and I only paid
60 so not too much of a loss.

(The mobo is as per my previous post:
