Thanks for replies
I decided to run the DOS version of lifeguard diagnostics as this the one
run to get the fault codes for the RMA. However it passed all tests. I
suspect reading the WD site info reporting bad sectors using the Windows
version of Lifeguard can be caused by other factors other than physical
damage to the platters. So I may run the Windows Lifeguard version again
and see what it says on a second run.
After chkdsk ran originally if did (or windows) automatically a load of
repair/remapping? type stuff to various files etc
