First, don't use IE. Switch to Firefox or Opera.

I've been using WebWasher as a web content filter for years. It's
fantastic. It filters out pop-ups, ads, scripts and so on. It's free for
personal use, though it asks you to donate to use it, but if you're cheap,
you don't need to. You can add your own rules and URLs to filter out as
well. If anything, it's a bit too effective, but turning it on and off is
just a matter of clicking on its icon in the system tray.

My WW statistics since 21/02/2005 show that it's filtered out nearly 250000
images, 25000 pop-ups and 100000 scripts. Ouch.

As for firewalls, just use your router. My PC is hooked up to a Linksys
one and I've had absolutely no problems with it. No spyware, viruses,
trojans, nothing.
