I thought versions up to 2.6 were ok? Mind I suspect NAT's good enough
for most purposes apart from those programs that you load that
circumvent it (browser updates and skype for instance?)
AVG's
latest upgrade has also been causing a lot of issues with the safe surfing
thing.
Best method for safe surfing is to run Firefox from a linux live cd** if
you suspect a site might do something naughty.
Or dig out an old machine (maybe one so old it doesn't need a noisy fan?)
and install a minimal linux distro and firewall on it - use this as a
gateway and you can disable all the firewalls on your working pc.
The firewalls on some routers are pretty near as good *as long as you
monitor them.* Navigate to the firewall page in the router and either
make it your startup page or at least bookmark it.
Monitor the throughput - both ways - if there's any unexpected traffic,
investigate.
Cheerio,
**Slightly more fun - the Puppy Linux live cd with Netsurf - blindingly fast
even on a clapped out PC from a local skip...

(Hello, there's a new release - under 90Mb - must go play.)
