Pat;s Note: The Hamilton Spectator have now got it even closer to
home.
Sooner or later these people are going to open up a can of worms.
They know their pigs are sick. They know that they also have MRSA in
their pigs and pork.
They have been long watching Northern Ireland and Scotland and
commenting.
By now they will be knee deep in tieing their subcontracting pig
husbandry to Irish knicker elastic.
Primart is a Weston company and the Queens representative in Ontario
for some years was of course Hilary Weston as Lieutenant Governor.
So, whilst they may not have seen the BBC programme, they will have
picked up on all the connections.
There is no chance of this going beck under the covers. Defra have no
option but to test the pigs and deal with the consequences.
The Civil Service may have the oppressive powers in the UK, but the
Canadians won't be quite so easily intimidated by a gang of bent
British vets that would long ago have been behind bars in any normal
country.

C. diff at General
June 24, 2008
Joan Walters
The Hamilton Spectator
(Jun 24, 2008)
Hamilton General Hospital has declared an outbreak of C. difficile
after a cardiac patient transferred in from Welland infected at least
four others within days.
As well as the five confirmed cases of C. diff, seven patients are
being monitored after they had contact with the infected patient on
the cardiac post-surgery ward and the cardiac intensive care unit.
All were in their 50s and 60s and had just had heart surgery.
"It's a very explosive type of outbreak," said Dr. Mark Loeb, medical
director of infection control at Hamilton Health Services. "Our
concern is there have been so many cases over a short period of time."
The infection, which caused at least 22 other outbreaks in Ontario the
past two years, moved unusually fast, Loeb said.
Even so, none of the five infected patients is showing "what we call
the catastrophic complications."
He was referring to the potentially lethal impact of C. diff.
At least 264 deaths have been confirmed at seven hospitals since 2006.
Hamilton General has temporarily stopped admissions to the 27-bed
cardiac post-surgery ward and will only do emergency heart surgery for
the next 48 hours, HHS president Murray Martin said.
Precautions have also been put in place in the 19-bed cardiac
intensive care unit, where heart patients go immediately after
surgery.
The transfer patient arrived from Welland on June 16, showing the
classic C. diff symptom of repetitive diarrhea. The patient went
through cardiovascular surgery, entered intensive care and was
transferred to the post-surgery ward. Lab tests confirmed the patient
was infected with C. diff.
Between Friday and Sunday, the four other confirmed cases emerged,
leading to exhaustive cleaning, vigorous hand hygiene and other
precautions.
The other patients under observation who came in contact with the
transfer from Welland are isolated. It's possible some others may be
incubating C. diff.
Martin noted that a few months ago the hospital would not have held
the briefing set up yesterday to inform the public. He said recent
heightened awareness of C. diff made it incumbent on the hospital to
disclose the cluster of cases.
A spokesperson for Welland Hospital, part of the Niagara Health
System, said there are no outbreaks of C. diff in the region. Niagara
infection control officials are working with HHS to "fully understand
the facts" surrounding the transfer patient.
