something has been happening.

But if one year may be cooler than a previous one then the human
effect can be countered by natural variation of weather.

But the present variations in the weather are not "natural".

playing devils advocate here but
what is "natural" in weather variations?

There have been nothing BUT variations in and out of various extremes for
hundreds / thousands of years.
There are no NORMALS
There is only the pattern that we happen to be in at the moment, which is
ever changing.
It took less than 80 years to create the last Ice Age here which covered
this property with 1200 metres of ice. - maybe a hundred less for you.

It is possible that Man is doing stuff that is adding to the variation,
maybe that effect is profound BUT mother nature is just as capable of taking
us WAY WAY beyond what Man is able to think of in a lot fewer years should
she decide to really play with us.

If the earth is warming up then the heat leaving the planet must be
decreasing,

Don't you mean "increasing"?

What I thought he meant was that more heat was being held in our atmosphere
therefore the sats out there should be recording a difference in the heat
being lost.
