Road salt additive may encourage sheep and deer onto Argyll roads
Snippet from article
Neil Brown, area roads and amenity services manager for Oban Lorn and the
Isles, confirmed that for the first time in Argyll and Bute, a
molasses-based additive had been mixed with salt to improve adhesion on the
road surface and reduce corrosion to vehicles. The application of this mix
to roads in the area began three weeks ago.
In regards to animals being a potential hazard to motorists, Mr Brown said:
'We do not expect this to happen enough to require additional warning to
drivers, but if it becomes a significant issue this can be revisited.'
Mr Brown said the molasses additive kept salt drier and prevented it from
bouncing and potentially ending up on the road verge. He added that the
council expected to use less salt per square metre as a result of mixing it
with molasses.
==
Earlier this year in northern Wales, a community consultative board asked
the Flintshire council to discontinue mixing molasses with salt and return
to using only rock salt on the roads, after 'hundreds' of sheep had flocked
to lick the sweet tarmac.

Only in Argyll do we not learn from other's mistakes!
