I have a doorstep milk delivery by Dairy Crest. I've received a letter
from them saying that the price of a pint is to increase by 4p. Several
reasons are given for this and I was wondering if they are correct in
what they are telling me.
Firstly they are to pay farmers an extra 3.85p per pint. I'm not sure
how much farmers get at the moment but I would imagine that it quite a
large percentage rise.
I can understand that weather and the rise of foodstuffs may have
decreased production, but they are also claiming a "world shortage of
milk". This would suggest that the UK imports or exports large
quantities of milk so is influencesd by world prices.
Is this true ?
Dairy farmers have been crashing out of business in droves due to farmgate prices below production costs. The only thing which has kept many going is lack of employment skills outside of farming. As a result there is indeed getting to be a milk shortage in the UK. You should hope that the price rise is not too little too late, and will be sufficient to prevent the complete collapse of the UK industry. Many of our dairy farmers are of an age approaching retirement, and there are not many ready to take their place.
