Its simple, given two equally persuasive arguments, pick the simplest.
and when dealing with an unknown individual how do you know which will be
the most persuasive, or which will appear the simplest to them?
Equally persuasive means both fit all the facts and none fail on one
point or another in the range of phenomena they claim to explain.
That's pretty well a points scoring exercise.
However if things are very similar then it may be hard to pick 'the
simplest'.
That's often why science has different theories at the fringes of
experimental knowledge.
However as far as god is concerned its zero physical evidence.
from my memory of physics most quantum effects are indirectly observed which
is pretty poor physical evidence as well ;-))
Electric currents are indirectly observed - by their effects on
magnets/resistancecoils/froglegs - we can't see them and we don't generally
try to feel them but we still accept their existence.
The problem with god is that there is a distinct dearth of any evidence
of his existence.
One of the core tenents of the Christian belief is a personal relationship
with God, I know many who will suggest that they have personal experience
of
his existance.
However like those working at the more esoteric frontiers of physics they
tend to be written off as eccentric
I don't see why. As long as you accept its all in the mind then there is
no problem having such a relationship or even belief. If you have had
some practice its very easy to go mystical in great churches and temples
and a most pleasant experience it can be. I expect starvation and/or
flagellation would have a similar effect, with less control or ability
to come back to reality.
for what particular definition of reality?
It strikes me that the definition of reality has more to do with the axioms
you base the definition on. The existance or nonexistance of God is
axiomatic and you build your percieved universe from that point
Perhaps it means the "reality" which is the result of the influences which
drive you on a "normal" day. If there is such a thing? If a normal day is
one without the starvation and flagellation above...............
Cheers
Jane
